Interview
83
[MODE7CD, label unknown.]
Short band interview conducted in
Munich, 9th December 1983, with a German reporter who seems to have three
axes to grind - Vince Clarke, "Fools" and limited edition
releases. Consequently there's plenty of discussion on these three areas
as well as some chat about the kind of audiences Depeche Mode are playing
to.

Depeche
Mode: The Interview
[Talking Music SPEEK013]
An
interview with Andy Fletcher conducted in the USA in early 1988. The
interview covers the band's development with particular emphasis on
their studio technique, management, and the attitude of the music
industry to them. Fletch takes time warming to the interviewer and can
be hard work in places, but there is plenty here especially for
someone interested in the music industry.

In
Movie Mode
["TV-AM",
ITV, February 1989.]
Dave
Gahan chats to the presenters of a British breakfast television programme
in the run-up to the cinema premiere of "101". He covers in
general detail the highs and lows of touring and of working in the music
world in general, and a little on the making of the film. Nothing too
deep, but very relaxed and enjoyable.

The
Wherehouse 3/20/90
[Sire/Reprise/Mute PRO-C-4329]
An instore band appearance in
Los Angeles to promote the release of Violator drew such a phenomenal
crowd that the area was brought to a standstill and police were
obliged to close the event in the interests of public safety. As a
consolation to the thousands of disappointed fans, the organisers made
this cassette available: the story of the event, narrated by K-ROQ DJ
Richard Blade and composed of snippets of band member interview and
news broadcasts as the drama unfolded. An outstanding and historically
essential item, you can taste the mounting excitement on the original.

Songs
Of Faith And Devotion EPK / Interview CD
[EPK:
taken from The Videos 86-98+, MF042. Interview CD: VERBONG1.]
Paul Gambaccini interviews the band
members separately, asking detailed and thought-provoking questions about
the development of the band, the making of Songs Of Faith And Devotion,
their attitude to contemporary music and media, and Depeche Mode's
internal chemistry. The material was also released on a promotional CD,
minus a few short segments and Gambaccini's questions. A highly
intelligent interview, indispensable for anyone interested in this
era.

Depeche
Mode: The Interview Sessions
[CHATCD14,
label unknown.]
Outstanding
and engaging interview, with live phone-in, of Dave by the Los Angeles
K-ROQ FM DJs Kevin and Bean in mid-February 1997. Although Dave is in
his confessional mode here and does keep returning to introspective
themes, the chemistry between the three men is awesome and the DJs
deftly and gently steer him towards more cheerful subjects. The
original CD is a joy to listen to: a transcript doesn't do it justice
and if you can buy a copy it is strongly recommended.

Interview
With Depeche Mode
[From
The Videos 86>98, Mute MF033 and Videos 86>98+,
Mute MF042.
Director: Sven Harding.]
Short
video interview which introduces the Videos 86>98 compilations. The
band members plus Anton Corbijn discuss the nature of their
collaboration and reminisce on some of the highlights. A lot is lost
through converting a video to a transcript, but plenty of interesting
snippets nonetheless.

Depeche
Mode: A Short Film
[From the video, EPKMUTEL5, included with The Singles 86>98
promotional box set, PBXMUTEL5. Director: Sven Harding.]
A
lively overview of the band's career as told by the band, Alan, Daniel
Miller and others who have worked closely with them since 1986. Naturally
as promotional material it has to stick to the music and play down to some
extent personal matters, so don't expect it to be an all-round history.
That said, the film is full of anecdotes and remains enjoyable even in
transcript. Excellent for a purely musical introduction.

Martin
Gore: Counterfeit 2 Interview
[From
the Counterfeit 2 Interview CD, Mute ICDSTUMM214]
Martin
talks relaxedly about the conception and recording of Counterfeit 2, with
special regard to how he chose certain songs and their significance to him
as a songwriter. A wonderful insight into a very private man, with some
surprising influences coming to the fore.

Dave
Gahan: Paper Monsters Interview
[From the Paper Monsters EPK, Mute IPKSTUMM216]
The audio interview section of the
Paper Monsters electronic press kit. Dave speaks in detail about the
events that convinced him to embark on a solo project, how he worked
alongside Knox Chandler, and where he found inspiration for the songs.
Unusually calm and balanced (for Dave), what comes through clearly is
that Paper Monsters was more than anything a spiritual journey for
Dave which led him to discover a lot about himself and his own
capabilities.

Songs
Of Faith And Devotion Press Release
[Sire Records / Reprise Records 1993. Words: Uncredited. Picture: Anton
Corbijn.]
Lively promotional blurb for Songs Of Faith And Devotion, which
manages to strike a sensible balance between covering the different
aspects of the band. Instead of the usual history the author has picked
out five key songs, and captures as far as possible the feel of the band's
music by focusing on the role and views of each band member. Less hyped
and better to read than many promotional items.

DM
86 98 Box Set Biography
[Mute PBXMUTEL5,
1998. Words: Uncredited.]
A quick
background history to the band, with focus on their releases, written
almost in bullet-point format. Being promotional material a lot is
glossed over and the piece makes the band's career seem misleadingly
like a seventeen year long march to victory. OK only as a framework to
the band's career - otherwise, too much hype to be of any real use.

Tour

|
From
the A Broken Frame tour programme
[1982. Words: Uncredited.]
The written
content of the 1982 programme: a short resume of the year so far and
mini-autobiographies written by each band member. This is definitely
the Mode as seen on Saturday morning kiddies' TV, sickly-sweet and at
times unsure even of what to say about themselves. Cringe, cringe!

From
the Construction Time Again tour programme
[1983. Words: Uncredited.]
Brief introductory piece for the 1983 tour programme. The
simplicity of the band's approach to putting themselves across is
still painfully evident here: although it describes what the band had
been doing in the last twelve months it reads far more like a postcard
home to their mothers.

From
the Black Celebration tour programme
[1986. Words: Uncredited.]
Potted band history serving as an introduction to the Black
Celebration tour programme. Although it reads like an itinerary in
places, the author does a pretty good job of cramming as much detail
on singles and albums as possible into a small space while keeping a
sense of enthusiasm for the band going.

'Strangers'
Introduction
[CPC/Bravado/Omnibus Press, 1990. Words: Paul Morley.]
Do not read this
introduction to the 1990 collection of Anton Corbijn photographs while
sober. Anyone expecting a standard piece describing the band will be
disappointed: the author adopts a surreal and almost mystical tone as
he aims to recreate the effect of Depeche Mode music. Some people will
be left cold by both the content and the Whitman-esque style. Mode
devotees, on the other hand, will be nodding in silent
understanding...

From
"Remixes 81-04"
[Mute XLCDMUTEL8, 2004. Words: Paul Morley.]
Essay, for want of a better
word, included in The Remixes 81-04, evoking the impact that the remix
has had both on Depeche Mode's career and on modern music in general.
The piece is written in the same drunken exuberant style as the
"Strangers" introduction. Morley pays tribute to the band's
flexibility both in the range of styles of remixes produced for them,
and their openmindedness in choosing remixers. Enough to explode the
eyeballs of anyone who still goes "Depeche Mode? Cor, they did
Just Can't Get Enough, are they still going then?"

Dave
Gahan's Horoscope
This is an astrological birth chart and interpretation
that I
drew up for Dave in April 2003. It was sent
to him c/o Mute Records as his
41st birthday present, which is why I'm calling him "you" throughout.
Since then I've kept it stashed away but with another birthday rolling round
this week I think it deserves to get some fresh air! The accompanying picture is
an old family snap of Dave as a toddler, taken from the "A Broken
Frame" tour programme.
